BOTHIES
'The day draws long in the glen. Rain needles down, cloud thickens and I feel the weight of the miles behind me. Then as the light starts to falter, there it is, a dark shape against the slope, the welcome outline of stone walls and chimney - the bothy!
Pushing the door open, I step inside to silence and the scent of woodsmoke from nights before. In the guestbook lie the names and stories of fellow wanderers I'll never meet, yet with whom I share this shelter.'
When I paint these bothies onto the map of their location my aim is to capture this union, the building itself placed upon the very lines and contours that lead us there. The map is the journey, the bothy is the pause and together they tell the story of wander and rest, solitude and community, wildness and refuge.
If you would like me to paint a particular bothy that isn't shown here please do contact me as I am very happy to take requests
