Stonechat Ruabon
Stonechat Ruabon

The Stonechat is a year-round resident and one of Britain’s hardiest small birds

That call, ‘chat chat chat’, sounds like two stones being struck together, which is where their name comes from. Once you’ve heard it, look around for a striking little bird perched on a high sprig of gorse or heather.

Stonechats don't migrate to sunnier climates in the Winter months and the sight of a stonechat is one of my favourite things about a winter walk.

The male is one of the most striking small birds you’ll see, bold orange-red breast, black head, white patches on the neck and wing. On a grey winter hillside he is a lovely sight!
