Stonechats are creatures of habit and I look out for them in the same spots on familiar walks. You’ll see them flitting from perch to perch but always returning to the same ones.
Stonechats are strongly associated with gorse. It’s not just a perch for them, it’s a habitat. They nest low in or beneath gorse bushes, use the dense thorny structure for shelter, and hunt insects from the exposed sprigs at the top. Where there’s gorse, look for stonechats.
This watercolour Stonechat is painted on a map of part of Eryri.
I painted this after I’d wild camped in this area and a stonechat was flitting around from gorse to gorse while I drank my morning coffee .
It’s a lovely memory .
