Dipper on a map of Plas Power Woods
The Dipper is one of my all time favourite birds - it is the only aquatic songbird, swimming underwater and walking along riverbeds in search of invertebrates in the stones below.
That famous 'dip' you see is something they instinctively do as soon as they leave the nest and if you watch a dipper you'll see that it dips in perfect synchrony with its blink. The same moment it bobs, a white membrane flicks across the eye.
They are an indicator species meaning that if you see one it is a sign of a healthy river.
This Dipper is painted directly onto an original OS map of an area where I see them known as Plas Power Woods, or Nant Mill Woods. It's a beautiful and popular little walk along the river.
